Our Debates!

Over the past term Room 7 has been learning about Debating

Some of the things we have learnt for a successful debate are;

Intejections -This is where you interrupt someone while they are speaking. This should put them off and you will also get two points, unless it wasn't valid, then you will get 1 point for effort.

Rebuttal-This is when you talk after the other team has said their speech for 20 to 30 seconds about what the other team has said that is incorrect.

Speehes-The first speakers speech has to be 3 minutes or more and the 2nd and 3rd speakers must be 2 minutes.

Mount Robert

On the 15 September Room 7 went on a day tramp up Mount Robert to increase our endurance and experience an Alpine environment.

We all got to school at around 7:30am so that we could get our gear checked and we had a run through of the day. We were on the bus by 8:00am. On the way there Trevor (A resource scientist from Tasman District Council) who is also Emily-Rose's Dad, gave us an interesting talk all about the plants , trees , water and bush-life .

When we got to the information centre in St Arnaud we had morning tea while Mr J told us all about a Maori carving and the legend to go with it .

At around 10:30am we traveled to Buller bridge in the bus , then we traveled in a mini bus to the top

car park which took three trips and we had to wait till the rest of the group came up.

At 11.00am we started our tramp up Mount Robert . We had a break every 10 minutes to eat and drink something . We got to the first hut at 12:30pm where we had a break , that was when we had our first big shower of snow . Our next hut was the bushline hut by the time we got there it was very heavilysnowing!! Not longafter that the class had a big snow fight outside relax hut . Cara made a R E A L L Y B I G snowball ,so Mr J said if she brought it back to Nelson he would give her Incentive points !!!

But on the way back it broke :(

The trip back down the mountain was a lot faster than the trip up because we were mostly just going downhill . We got to the bottom carpark around 4:30pm.The trip back was very quiet because everybody was sleepy-_- . We got back to Broadgreen at 6:10pm , where our parents were waiting . We all really enjoyed the trip because it was a great experience and we got to go outside of the classroom .

Room 7 Rock Climbing

Room 7 Rock Climbing

This morning room 7 had a great time on the rock climbing wall in the hall.

Mr J taught us all the information we needed to know to stay safe when we were climbing up the wall, and when we were belaying for the climber.

For those of us who

aren't too confident on the climbing wall or have never done it before, there is the easy wall. It slopes slightly towards the wall like this /. The next wall is straight up, and the next one has slightly less footholds. The next wall slopes slightly out

wards. The walls get easier as they go along from left to right. The last wall is the hardest and slopes

outwards, and has a ridge we have to go up and around.

If you are reasonably confident on the rock climbing wall, you could try to do it blindfolded, said Mr J. 'Yeah right!' We don't think any of us will be ready to try that any time soon! We all need a bit of practice!

Some people missed out due to us running out of time, but we all really enjoyed it and hope we get to do it again next term!

Our Waka Challenge

This week Fifeshire had a team technology challenge.We were split into groups of four, half of us went to Room 8.We had to make a Waka out of: 15 sheets of newspaper,a roll of tape, 30 ice block sticks and our imagination. All in 45 minutes!

The Waka had to have strong sturdy sides and be shaped like a Waka, it also had to fit one person in it as shown in this picture above.[Sam and Roy's Waka]

Many of the Waka's in Room 8 weren't good at all, some of the students had good ideas but they didn't manage to pull them together.

The team that won would get 20 incentive points to go towards their Incentive Awards.

Our Room 7 Sgraffito!

On Friday 25th of June a couple of students made a Sgraffito. We made the Sgraffito in modules. We got an A1 piece of cardboard and ruled up the cardboard diagonally about two rulers wide. Then we coloured it in with 11 different coloured pastels. Finally after that we put a layer of black paint over the top of the pastel and waited for it to dry.

After it had dried we got a kebab stick and scratched our names into it.

We got every one in the class to sign it including our teacher Miss Rodman and the fishes;  Ginga, Mullet, Boris and Midget. We found a place on the wall for it on top of the whiteboard.

Environmental Science

Sustainability is making something last longer and one way to make the world a more sustainable place is to recycle. Recycling is when you reuse something after you've already used it.If we don't use the three R's (Reduce,Re-use and Recycle) nothing will be left for people to come in the future.

In June 2010 Room 7 went for a rubbish walk around our school grounds. Room 7 were looking for rubbish for over 50 minutes. After that we had to sort out the rubbish we had picked up (wearing rubber gloves of course! :),and put it into three different categories such as reduce,re-use and recycle because 'Environmental Science' is our term goal. Some people even went in the bushes and found a lot of rubbish.

Cooking in Specialist Classes

This term (term 2) half of room 7 are in Cooking for Technology. Some of the recipes we have made are Stuffed Potatoes, Easy Quiche, Fudge Pudding, Apple and Chocolate Chip Muffins, Combination Noodles and much more!  They were delicious! Most students favourite food was the Chocolate Fudge.  Each term we change Specialist Classes; there is Woodwork, Performing Arts, Art and Cooking.  In term 1 this half of the class was in Woodwork.   While the other half of the class were in Performing Arts, they are now in Art.  

The people in cooking made Combination Noodles, and we dressed up with Japanese plaits and hats!

OUR ART CLASS

Hi I'm Ethan and I'm doing art. Today I'm drawing the moon. Our art teacher is called Mrs Packer and she teaches us different drawing techniques and two point perspective and how to look at art differently.

 one of my favourite subjects.

This is Arataki's drawing. He drew it for his space-cape. It is a picture of an alien. He had more of these pictures but we didn't take photo's of them.

Environmental Documentary on Sustainability of the World's Resources.

This is a photo of  Dubai, an artificial island.

The topic this term is Environmental Science. 

We watched a movie about the earth. It was called "Home".

We were asked to write five things we found interesting and

 five questions that we had. Here are some things that we found interesting.

1. Dubai has an artificial island.

2. 70% of gas can not form in our lungs.

3. 14,000 litres of water is used to make rice.

4. One in four lives live like they used to years ago. 

This is a photo of a dead sea.

And five questions that we still have are.

1. How do volcanoes explode ?

2. What is a dead sea?

3. How does it get dark?

4. How did the first animal form?

5. How was the first human formed ? 

6. How did we get on  earth ?

We learned about the life cycle of earth and how we formed in to a big world.

  

     

Cricket Skills with Mr. Hoskings!

For the next six weeks, Room 7 will be doing Cricket Skills with Mr. Hoskings from Nelson Cricket.

He has already taught us how to throw a ball and catch like a cricket player.

He also taught us how to hit the ball like a cricket player. Next time we have cricket skills, at the end we will play a game of cricket. The first session with Mr Hoskings was really fun but a bit hot outside. We cant wait till our next session! Also at the very end of the six weeks of Cricket Skills the Room 7 students will get an Assessed Certificate.

Numeracy in room 7

Room 7 Numeracy!

In Room 7 we were put into our maths groups: Triangles,    Squares 

and Circles. We all have our own Group boxes and Problem solving boxes. We all take turns with Ms Rodman on the mat for a lesson while the other groups do group boxes or activity sheets. We are in our own class for maths for two terms, then we go back into our own old maths class! 

On Tuesday we were set a task. One of the groups got given a piece of paper each and had to fold it into quarters, eighths etc to look at Equivalent Fractions. We all had different strategies. We learn Numeracy on Monday's, Tuesday's, Wednesday's and Thursday. We also recently learnt how to add fractions!   See you later

Fifeshire Responsibility

                    Fifeshire Responsibility

As this terms virtue is 'responsibility', room 7 and eight gathered together on Monday to act out and take some pictures about responsibility!  We were provided with cameras, and got put into teams of 5. We then thought of an idea that demonstrated responsibility. E.g  someone was in the tree and got told to get off!  We had a variety of ideas.... So the five groups reported their work  to the teacher.  She was really impressed with what we had accomplished ! She plugged the cameras into her laptop one by one, then downloaded the pictures. Next session we will add speech bubbles and make them into an interesting comic!
